Later Mike

So Micheal Jackson passed away today... heart attack at the age of 50.

As a kid I was surrounded by adults who absolutely loved him, and to be honest, I thought he had some mad tunes me self.

Dirty Diana would be my favorite...

Along side the norms like Billie Jean and Thriller. Say what you will... the guy left a mark.

Plus he could dance good...

Though I liked him as a kid... I wasn't too crazy about him as a teenager or as an adult. Sure I'd tap my feet if I heard a song or two. But huge fan I wasn't.

But today at work I had to make a music montage of his stuff for a radio trailer. One of our stations is having this big Micheal Jackson special tomorrow. As I was putting together the songs, I couldn't help but feel a little sad. This guy was an icon at one time... then the world turned him into a freak. Sure to a big extent, he contributed into turning him self into a freak, but in recent years it didn't look to be getting any better.

He became the butt of everyones jokes, the star of a new scandal every other month, every one wanted to see what the heck he'd do next.

What kind of life must that have been?

From being the sweet heart of the world to the punch line of a David Zucker movie.

Ah well... it's all over now. His record sales are probably gonna sky rocket even further, people will not pay as much attention to his crazy shit. And he'll be seen only as the big pop icon he once was.

It's weird when someone, who you saw all over the media as kid, dies. It really makes you feel like times are moving on.

The King of pop is dead.

Like the Beatles or Elvis... no one else will be has big I reckon. They can't. The way the world runs now days... there simply isn't room for it. These guys showed up at a time when the people were ready for such a thing.

They happened like a phenomenon.

Go watch Moonwalker... Micheal Jackson turns into a robot in it.

The he turns into a space shop and flies away...

To a better place... away from judging faces.

and small children.

Ghost Exterminator

Done for this.

A guy who hunts ghosts and keep them in these bottles. But I imagine it being a some what depressing job. Bottling sad, desperate spirits who don't want to leave some place that the love.

Was looking for my sweater

... and I found some of my old VHS tapes :P

I have a whole lot of them that I recorded at home off the copies I would rent. I remember that When I was like 8 or 9, I was so happy when for some reason or another my dad bought a
another VCR.

I'd rent horror movies from a store up the road from where I live, and tape my own copy :D

Also found a copy of Hype!, a few video docos on the Doors and The Beatles, plus some concert videos.

No porn.

A lot of em are all moldy now though... but there's a clean copy of House by the Cemetery that I have to watch! I know it's a shit movie, but it scared the crap out of me as a kid.

Tonight I'm going to find out if my VCR still works. On the side are some of the originals I have... click to see em better.

Every body wants a cut!

I must be slipping or my friends are getting too eager. It used to be that I would be the one hounding my friends, holding them at gun point, showing them trailers for up coming zombie movies. But today we went over to drop some stuff at my buddy Wilson's place, and he played us the trailer for Zombieland.

Note: there is another movie out there called Zombieland that is about some people trapped in a zombie themed amusement park. I heard that one isn't very good.

Co-written by TV writer turned first time move writer Paul Werrnick, Zombieland looks to be a fun filled zomedy. Though it is said to be an independent film, the movie seemed to have a better budget than the majority of recent releases.

It even stars Woody Harrelson and that hot chick from Superbad Emma Stone.

...and it doesn't have that guy who plays Gorge Michel in Arrested Development.

Thing is though... when I saw the trailer for the movie, I did have a stupid grin on my face... but a part of my non-undead brain was screaming out 'Meh... every body's making zombie movies now.'

It's like a cool craze that's gotta be cashed in on. But I'm sure the movie is more than that... after all, my first movie is gonna be a zombie movie too.

Zombieland is also gonna be going the way of the screaming, running zombies. The trailer has plenty of freeze frame shots for some reason, of zombies chasing people.

In his own words, the casting director said the zombies are gonna be:

“[F]erocious, infected people that move erratically. They are diseased, as opposed to undead. These are not the lumbering walking dead of Romero’s zombie movies, but instead the super jacked up 28 Days Later / Dawn of the Dead (2004) zombies. They are scary and gnarly and gross.”

Cool :D

I'm sorry... but I love the running screaming ones... But if a zombie apocalypse does break out in real life, and it will... I would rather be up against the slow moving Romero ones.

Yeah I'm excited... I've been watching a lot of really bad, low budget zombie movies lately... I'm in the mood to be swept of my feet ( and eaten alive) by a good zombie movie. Zombieland looked pretty damn exciting, and the trailer had a load of laughs in it... so it has now been added to my 'must see' list.

Which is surprisingly short this year.

I'm also looking forward to REC2 and another 28 Days/Weeks sequel.

O and you know what's funny?

This

Shortly after finishing the filming of Zombieland, Woody Harrelson had an altercation with a TMZ photographer at New York City's La Guardia Airport. His defense was that he was still in character and thought the cameraman was a zombie.

Sadly I couldn't get any cool pics of Zombieland, though I spent a whole 2 minutes looking for em online. Here's a pic I stole from Zombie Nation instead.

You know what's fun?

This is fun...

Zombies are attacking your house!! But luckily your loving plants have decided to rise up against the zombie hordes and protect your lawn. Trust me, it sounds cheesy but it's loads of fun. I spent the whole afternoon today playing this thing, with my buddy Albie cheering me on.

The animations are nice and the chracter designs are almost as cute as a puppy stumbling.

Grab it here.

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Sigh...

So I wanted to partake in some of Warren Ellis's remake/ remodel thingo for this week... But sadly my artists block persists.

I have a few ideas floating around in my head, but when I try to make some thing coherent out of it... my head melts. So I did this quick bit for now, and I'll work on something later.

So I was sitting around at work

And I couldn't think of anything to draw...

Downloading Nancy

As captivating as watching someone dissect a toad pinned to a table. Depressing, white-washed and bland... yet I wanted to see what happened next.

Apparently at it's Sundance screening... Downloading Nancy prompted a shizz load of walk outs.

But if you have an hour and half to spare... this movie will disturb you.

It's Coraline... with an "O"

I just finished watching a gem of a movie, an animated number called "Coraline."

And man was it awesome... Stop reading this and go watch it!

Or... just read on... but make sure you watch it afterwards!

So I was down at the local video store today, trying to find something to entertain me for the night... when my buddy Wilson was like "hey that's that stop motion movie!". Since it has been a while since I've seen a Stop-Motion film... I decided to get it.

Directed by Henry Selick, the genius behind "Nightmare before Christmas", Coraline is the first stop- motion feature to be shot in 3D. This gives the film a strange sense of depth that looks very cool. In fact... not since "Nightmare..." have I seen an animated feature that not only delights... but creates an atmosphere that is both pretty and creepy. The style of animation lends life to the characters in a way that other forms of animation just couldn't have. Looking at it, one can tell that this movie was a labor of love for its crew. All 450 of em according to Wikipedia.... shooting for 18 months following 2 years of pre- production.

The movie follows the adventures of a little girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning) who has just moved into a new house. She is your average little girl, with the average issues that normal little girls probably go through. Sadly though she feels that her parents don't have enough time for her. And they're always preoccupied by other things to take any real interest in her life.

Awwww...

But one day she makes a friend who gives her a doll... a doll that looks just like her. But where did the doll come from? Who made it?

Lets just say the doll holds more secrets than it lets on, and eventually Coraline does meet the dolls maker. What follows is a night mare adventure that makes for a great film.

Look at the kid behind her... he has buttons for eyes o.0

I don't want to give anything away... but the story is very good. And why wouldn't it be? It's based on a graphic novel by none other than Neil Gaiman.

I didn't know this going in, I only found out that Gaiman made it after I looked it up. But it all made so much sense afterwards.

Coraline is a trip to watch... with colors and imagery that makes you wonder where the creators bought their stash. There's a malevolent sense of dread and eeriness through out the movie... which makes it a lot of fun.

Things never seem right...

The novel has been compared to the likes of Louise Caroll's Alice in wonder land, and watching the film... you totally see why. I would love to just rant on and on about the movie and tell you about all the cool things in it... but I really don't want to spoil it for any one who hasn't seen it. But do your self a favor and watch it.
