There are no Zombies on Nukulau Island

My friends and I checked.

We are currently in the middle of a four day Easter Weekend, so to start of the festivities, my friends and I decided to take a boat trip to the Island of Nukulau. Here's a map.

It was good fun.

Roy (back turned), Me and Wilson with his daughter.

We swam all afternoon and then we went for a walk around the island. Sadly I had forgotten to take my baseball bat, but it was alright... we didn't run into any zombies.

After the walk we all sat down and had a nice dinner, before spending an hour or so trying to light a fire. Eventually we got it going. Then we sat around and shared a bit of Kava culture. Which involves sitting around a basin of mixed Kava, and talking, laughing and just enjoying each others company.

Our Hut... we found an old Bure and patched it :P

At around 11pm or so, the real fun started :D

Because that's about the time we started dishing out the ghost stories, while sitting by the beach near our little hut... with only the light from the fire and the full moon. Some how we had neglected to take candles or lanterns, and we only had one torch.

It was a lot fun, thankfully we had a full moon on the night.

A little after midnight we decided to go exploring.

It was actually pretty funny cause by now we were sort of drugged up on Kava and spooked from the ghost stories. My buddy Albie had fallen asleep and so had the girls, which meant my friends MJ, Wilson, Roy and I were the only ones going for the adventure. The funniest part was us walking through the jungle at midnight and me asking MJ:

"How come you're creeped out? I thought you said you didn't believe in ghosts..."

And MJ goes: "I said I didn't believe in them, that doesn't mean I'm not scared of them"

So we followed some spooky path through the jungle, stopping at creepy trees and shizz here and there, just to scare our selves even more. I had to keep telling everyone not to point at the trees or go under them, because there is a Fijian myth about how ghosts hang out in trees at night. Something about how because the trees are grounded, the spirits that don't want to leave, latch on to them so they can be grounded too. Yes, lots of creepy shizz like that.

We did all this without a torch because of MJ's infinite wisdom

MJ: "By now our eyes have adjusted to the dark, and besides we only have one torch, and that only makes a cone of light. And it's just one cone of light. If something runs by it and we're all like 'WTF was that' we'll panic cause our eyes will be trying to adjust between the cone and the darkness, and that'll make things even scarier"

Meh...

So after making our way from one end of the island, through the jungle to the other in the dead of night with just the moon light, we had to walk all the way back again. There was suppose to be some old grave site on the island some where, but we never got around to looking for it.

View from the hut when tide came in

Sleeping on the ground was alright... though I think I could wait a long time before having to do it again. Plus taking a piss in the middle of the night was a little creepy.

But the Island it self was very nice... full of history, and it was just nice to get away with the fellas and me gurl.

Next weekend I'm trying to convince the guys to have Alien Marathon, cause that's when I pick up my Alien Quadrilogy Box set :D

Watched Monsters Vs Aliens Yesterday

And it was pretty sweet.

You could tell that the makers of the movie loved the sci-fi stuff when they were growing up, cause they re-created it with such style. Plus the humor is very funny.

I particularly loved the main baddie and his arsenal of deadly robots. He had a very old-school sci-fi feel to him.

Thing that I walked away with from the movie was, in the 2 scenes where the main chick gets knocked out, and then when she wakes up her clothes have changed. Does that mean the some one got to see giant lady bum?

I wonder...

Bollywood Horror

Growing up I was subjected to a lot of Hindi movies. I say 'subjected' because in away for me, even as a kid growing up... I found Hindi movies to be terrible.

I did how ever enjoy a number of Amitabh Bachchan movies… but lets not get into that.

I also have a memory of being really scared of some movie called Punari Mundir (Hindi Old Temple) which was about this crazy monster/ werewolf thing that lived under this temple that in my memory looks like an old crypt.

I was like 5 or 6 back then so… yeah.

But today I was talking to this guy at work and he was telling me that he read up on the Dead Snow post I did before this. He was telling me how he wished that India, or Bollywood, dished out more horror movies.

Or should I say… put out better horror movies. With so many great horror movies out of Spain and Norway out last year… and movies like Ringu becoming almost a pop culture phenomenon, it would be nice if India joined the fun.

After all they have such a diverse culture that they can pull from. I’m sure some where in all their historical texts we would find a shizz load of creepy stories to rip.

I even have one about a myth from Fiji. Ask me some time and I’ll tell you about the script I wrote :P

So as this guy and I talked some more… he remembered this one movie that he saw some time back that was kinda creepy. It was called Yavarum Nalam, which translates to “Everyone is fine”. This movie was later released as 13B.

I looked it up online and man it sounds pretty interesting.

It’s about this guy that buys a television set that seems to be broadcasting a mirror image of his and his family’s life. It’s all fun and games until people in the show…start dying.

Dun Dun DUUUUUUUUUUN!

I’m not gona say more about it, cept that Ima try and get my hands on it. I like the posters for the movie… looks kind of old school horror.

Just watched Dead Snow

And man it was awesome :D

When I first heard about the Norwegian zombie movie Dead Snow (Norwegian Død snø), I was a bit worried that all the hype and shizz about it was gonna make the movie fall short. Cause I kind of had developed some high expectations for it.

I keep telling my self I shouldn't have high expectations, but I'd be expecting too much of my self to change.

But this movie deserves all the hype it gets.

I must admit that it started off a bit 'iffy', but only because the beginning seemed a little too cheesy. But once the shizz hits the fan, it all comes together very nicely. Story wise Dead Snow is very simple. Some kids head up to the mountain for a little bit of skiing and a bit of the ol' sex and candy. But unwittingly run into a horde of flesh starved zombie Nazi's.

What follows is a few laughs... coupled with a little blood and gore.

Did I say little? Sorry... I meant lots of blood and gore. The best part of Dead Snow is the snow. Cause blood looks so good when it's smeared across white :D

And there is lots of blood... and guts. Things get chopped off and sown back on. I don't want to spoil anything for any one but it is my blog and I want to talk about some of my best bits.

The simplest one is this one bit where this guy is stitching is own neck after it gets chewed open. I watched that part with a bit of a chuckle and some 'O shit son!'

Then theres the bit where this chick is being eaten up by Zombie Nazi's and we get see some of it through her point of view.

Then there's the infected hand + chainsaw scene which was a little nod to another one of my favorite classics Evil Dead 2.

I think that's what I love about this movie. It just reminded me of so many of my favorite horror movies. The whole movie doesn't try to be anything more than it wants to be, and that's a mixture of all the gory bits the film makers stored away in their sick little heads after hours and hours of watching zombie/horror movies.

With a bit of chracter development thrown in for good measure.

The Zombies tore this guy a new everything.

This movie isn't going to be making me re-think my top 5s list when it comes to zombie movies. But it certainly will be a classic in it's own way. If you love Evil Dead 2 or Dog Soldiers and the like... then Dead Snow will make your night, and it's a no brainier for zombie fans... See what I did there :D

Watch it with a friend for the best results.

O and it is sub-titled, cause it is after all a Norwegian film. If you can't deal with that, then just wait awhile and I'm sure the good people in Hollywood will remake it.
