Visceral Ripping into new I.P

Today I came across an interesting little rumor that Visceral Games is planing on releasing a new game over the Xbox Live and Playstation network.

This time they've stepped out of middle age poetry and into 18th century serial killing.

In particular, you get to run around the streets of London as none other than Jack the Ripper him self.

But in Visceral's new I.P. aptly titled The Ripper, Jack doesn't rip into dirty little Victorian prostitutes. Instead he is prowling the night, hot on the heels of vampires, demons and other creepy things that go bump in the night.

Decked out in cool period weaponry as well as some things he put together him self, Jack kills shizz to keep London's streets safe.

Would it be morbid to say that I'm some what of a fan of Jack the Ripper?

It's not like I go around collecting clippings of serial killers and shizz. I just find this one guy kind of frightening and intriguing. Regardless of actual events, the myth of him with the top hat and black carriage... killing and disappearing into the night has long been the fascination of many story tellers. Though this is not the first time old Jack's been given the game make over, I like the angle that Visceral is going for here.

But as it is it's still just a rumor, but I am really looking forward to seeing what comes of it. I just love the shizz Visceral comes up with. This could be a little gem to "kill time" with until we get our hands on their up coming Dead Space 2.

There's a bit of news about the whole thing over at Destructoid that you can read here. As well as some more info from another post on here.

Should 'infected' be considered zombies?

Attack of the paper zombies!

When I'm not messing around on the 360 or in front of the DVD player, I like to fish around online for games that I can play for free :P

But not just any free game.

Before I divulge my time into anything, I'd like to make sure it be worth while. I've "press enter to start" on say many games, only to quit while swearing at having wasted my time.

But one game that had me hooked from the moment I started playing was a little number called Attack of the paper zombies.

O my goad they're everywhere!@#

Paper Zombies is a real time stratergy game, where you control the fate of a group marines as they tackle a zombie horde invading from outer space. The graphics though very simple, are unique and effective. The game play too is very intriguing, and a lot more developed than you might expect.

The members of your marines have varying abilities, and you also have access to such things as gun turrets, flame throwers, snipers and even teleporters. Aside from the usual creeping zombies, you have more sinister ones, and even full hives that create waves of undead, that you need to dispatch of before they get out of hand.

I actually spent a great deal of time on this one. Depending on your skill level with RTS games, this may take a little work getting used to. I actually had to do the tutorials before I could move on.

This would be a good way to kill some time if you're sitting around aimless either at home, or even at the office.

You can find out a little bit more about the game here, as well as get your hands on a download of the game.

have fun :D

Dead Space 2 Offical interview

The crew from Visceral games take the time out to say a few words on their up coming squeal to my favorite game of all time. All I can ask is PLEASE don't f*ck it up.

As a huge fan of the first game, I just really want an extension of the things that I loved about it. I'd be happy with the same mechanics from the first game, but a whole new world/ area to explore and play through. Kinda like the old Resident Evil games, that kept the core game play pretty much the same for all the installments, but gave you new environments with little game play tweaks here and there.

Another thing I'd like to see is maybe more survivors to interact with or play along side. It would be so cool to fight and hack you're way to some dark, desolate corner to find some guy holding out against the impending doom that is the Necromorphs. It just adds a certain human aspect to the game, especially when you watch said person die horribly because of some stupid mistake you make.

I understand that being on you're own adds a deep sense of dread and despair, but it would be interesting none the less.

Like at some point in Doom3 (My second favorite game of all time) you find this one doctor, who guides you through a few dark levels with his lantern.

"Wanna go on an adventure?"

The area is crawling with demons hiding all over the place, ready to pounce on you and devour your soul, bitch thing is that you can't have your torch out at the same time as you gun.

So you find your self with a twitching trigger finger, huddling close to this guy; cause if you loose him...you're f*cked.

Basically I just hope they don't mess with Dead Space's original formula too much. I've already ranted about this in an earlier post which you can find here, so I'll take a breather now.

There's a Q & A session with Steve Papoutsis who is the executive producer on Dead Space 2 that can be seen here.

Zombocalypse Now

As a kid I was a huge fan of those Choose your own adventure books…

I can actually remember the first book of the genre that I got. It was called Battle Blade Warrior and it was part of a series of adventure books called Fighting Fantasy. I got the book when I was like 8 our something, and I remember that it cost six bucks.

Soon I had myself a huge collection of these books, and I would spend hours just making my way through them with a dice and the little charts they had on the back with points and stats and shizz. These books also had the maddest covers and awesome illustrations on the inside. I used to burn out pencils just trying to recreate them.

In fact Steve Jackson, one of the guys who wrote the books, was probably my first favorite author. I kept reading his work till I was about 14 or something, and once I even slapped a kid because he saw that I was reading Jackson's Troll Tooth Wars and he told me the ending just to piss me off.

Yeah… I was hardcore.

The reason all this comes to mind is because today I came across a little gem of a book called “Zombocalypse Now.”

It’s a crazy adventure book, in the vein of those old “Choose your own adventure” books… and bloody hell that’s a rabbit with a bloody chainsaw, surrounded by zombies.

It practically screams bleeding “Awesome”

Zombocalypse Now is a comedy/horror reimagining of the choose-your-own-ending books you grew up with. You’ll be confronted with undead hordes, internet dating, improper police procedure, and the very real danger that you’ll lose your grip on reality and wind up stark raving mad.

The zombie apocalypse has never been this much fun.

Now if that isn’t a write up for a good time… I don’t know what is. You can check out a little excerpt from the book HERE.

What makes me sad though is that currently there are a few competitions running around online that lets you win yourself a copy of the book. Sadly these competitions aren’t open to folks from Fiji :(

I’ll see if I can order myself a copy from one of our local book stores…

Cool thing is that this book is boasting 112 different endings… so I won’t need to be slapping anybody until I get my copy.

Prepairing for the storm

So we're preparing for what is said to be the biggest Cyclone that's ever hit Fiji.

Tropical Cyclone Tomas has been brewing since Friday, when the cyclone warning was first issued. Schools were closed early and people were told to go home. So my mates and I decided to go down to JJ's, a local bar to get a few drinks.

Nothing much happened that night, and things remained relatively calm all the way through Saturday too. We actually ended up having a movie night over at a friends place.

We were up till 4am watching Rec 1 and 2, Dawn of the dead and Monster Squad!

Yesterday (Sunday) when my girl friend and I got home, we had to put up with a water cut for a bit, but that was sorted this morning when we woke up.

But since midnight last night, there's been a curfew, so that means no work today except for essential services. So far here in the capital we've gotten heavy rain and some mad wind conditions, but some parts of Fiji have been evacuated.

The radio said that about 5000 people from the outer islands have been relocated to emergency centers that have been set up by the government. There's also news of further water cuts to come and maybe even power cuts.

At the moment though as long as I can watch my DVDs and surf the net... I think I'll be ok.

If we do get a power cut though... I've got a couple of sci-fi books I've been meaning to catch up on.

Plus there's a little extra quality time with the Mrs.

*Edit: We had to put up the shutters and take the TV satellite dish down, because of the mad winds out side. The rain has gone up a few notches, too cause it's actually pounding down on us now.

It's a scary trip watching shizz get tossed about outside. Living in Fiji, I've seen this kind of weather a few times... but I hope it doesn't escalate into the "biggest cyclone to hit Fiji" that the weather office is talking about.

Last Night I discovered Mugens

Spent the night kicking the shizz out of Marvel and Capcom characters with Batman :D

Check out the video below... It's Ash vs the chick from The Ring. Ash's finisher makes me smile every time.

Mugens ... the closest I've come to bringing my dreams to life :P

While looking for a Mugen game with Ash, I came across another interesting fighting game called Terrordome.

Ash Vs Freddy? Dream come true!

This monster looks to be a lot of fun... and best of all it's FREE.

Dead Space 2: slight rant

I have Dead Space on my mind...

I know that Dead Space 2 is set to release next year, which is a long while away...

But lately I've been looking up a lot of things online about it, and I'm reminded about how excited I was when the first Dead Space came out.

From the first trailer I saw for the first game, I knew I had to play it... and I even went as far as getting my self a new Xbox 360.

My old one had fallen to the red ring of death!@#

Thing is though, I just really hope that Visceral game's doesn't muck Dead Space 2 up...

Issac Clarke in his new rig

Visceral seems to know what I want out of games. The direction they move towards creatively, result in concepts that capture my attention... and a while ago I would have said they were my favorite developers.

But their latest offering Dante's Inferno was a little disappointing.

Hopefully they can get back into the groove with the franchise that set them off in the first place. Already I'm a little skeptic, after reading on IGN how Visceral said that Dead Space 2 will have Modern Warfare like action.

Issac and his new friends

Granted Dead Space one did have some mad action... but I thought of it as more of a survival horror game first and an action game second. The pacing of the first game really did it for me... and the feeling of vulnerability made the game very tense. But if you're ripping through creepy baddies all 'trigger happy' like in Modern Warfare... will it still be survival horror?

What I am looking forward to is exploring more of the Dead Space world. To find out more about what happened to the people that were done in before my chracter got into the mix. Maybe learn more about the Necromorphs and what their all about.

Dead Space also pushed the game innovation envelope a bit too, with an interesting approach to it's HUD display and the whole strategic dismemberment game-play...

The team that worked on Dead Space were also a lot of fun to follow online. The developer diaries and such that they put out, really showed how the game was a massive labor of love for the crew.

Tracy Espeleta enjoying her work

One such developer blog entry can be read over at kombo.com with a cool write up by Tracy Espeleta (producer) on skinning meat and studying gore.

Hopefully Visceral approaches Dead Space 2 with the same kind of freshness and enthusiasm from the first game... not just treat it as a bloody cash cow to milk again.

Cause I really want to play Dead Space 2... and I want to love it like I love the first one.

Torchlight: with Zombie goodness

So I've recently started playing Torchlight, which is a total Diablo rip off.... but I love it. I'm playing as the Destroyer class, that's sort of a barbarian/warrior class, and he is so bad ass.

But what would make my time with the game even sweeter? How about a zombie skin for my chracter :D

I call him Von Doom

I found the skin over at the game developers fan site and you can grab it here.

While you're at it... check out the Zombie skin for the Vanquisher class as well.

I may have to play that class next...only because of that skin.

Fueling my Dead Space obssesion

So earlier tonight I was going through some back articles over at The Independent Gaming Source, when I came across an article with the picture below.

It was a collage of indie games ... and as I looked through the tiny little thumbnails, something familiar caught my eye. Then a part of my brain exploded and I immediately proceeded to freak the fack out:

Actual size of pic on that site

Because right there... I saw a tiny 'pixel art' pic of Issac Clarke, the hero of Dead Space!!

O I didn't just think that it looked like Issac from Dead Space... I knew it was him! And if there was an indie De-make of Dead Space, I was sure as hell going to play it.

I searched through the rest of the blog and found nothing about this game. It didn't even give me the games name. I followed the links and that didn't help me either. With out a name it was hopeless.

I tried Googleing for "Dead Space De-make" or "Indie Dead Space Game" and nothing came of it.

So I Googled "Indie game sites" and then went through each and every freaking page of the sites I'd found, looking for this game (that may not even exist)

But it was Issac Clarke from Dead Space... I was sure of it. I'd know him any where.

Then... after about 2 hours or so of flipping through 'older entries' on a shizz load of sites...

...there it was.

On the 12th page under the action section of a site called Free Games Archive... I found it.

It was called "Space Cry" ...and I have no idea how that name relates to Dead Space in any way. But it was in fact a side scrolling, 2d, De-made version of my beloved Dead Space.

Joy filled my tired heart as I downloaded the game and began to play it...

Only to find that it was shit.
