Cool Artist
I came across a very cool artist this morning thanks to my fellow blogger Bones. Jose A. Mercado, or Munk One as he calls him self....is an American artist who is best known for his covers for major bands like Korn and My Chemical Romance amongst others.But according to his bio page on his site...it seems his making waves with his Fine Art collection as well.
If his Zombie pics are anything to go by... I can't wait to see more of his work.

Xmas draws near
The last couple of days have been very busy. Work has been flooded with all these Christmas commercials I gotta put together, and things at home are getting more family orientated. But I have been making time now and then to get my fix of that sweet horror movie goodness.
Last week I spent my nights watching a few interesting movies, but sadly nothing too exciting. I saw a number called The Cycle which was some what entertaining. But nothing to write home about...or to blog about for that matter. It did however have this one hot chick named Leah Gibson who I think should make it big same day. You know...because she's cute.
Tonight however I saw a movie called Dead End...and man was it a fun ride. It was about a family that's on its way to visit some relatives when the father decides to take a 'short cut'. Needless to say this short cut results in some really messed up shit which makes for good entertainment. They eventually run into this lady in white that seemed to be wondering in the woods. One thing leads to another, at one point the lady in white eats this kids face... go watch it for your self.
It has been a while since I had so much fun watching a horror movie. Dead End is one of those movies where you're not sure if you should be laughing at something that happened or if you should be terrified.
There were so many moments where I actually laughed out loud during this movie. My best part is when the mother does a drawing of the son... watch it and you will laugh too. The cool thing is...the humor works in such a way that it kind of distracts you from the scary bits in the movie, thus allowing them to surprise you even better.
As far as horror movies for the festive season go...you got a winner with Dead End. The blood and gore in this is a bit on the weak side...but the story and the characters more than make up for it. The dysfunctional family in the middle of a creepy crisis is a lot of fun to watch. The way the people interact with one another and they way they react to the messed up stuff that happens is a treat to watch.

Don't get me wrong though.. aside from the laughs this movie is pretty damn creepy. It kept me jumping and guessing what's going t o happen next. Though I must say half way through most of you would have guessed the main plot of the story...it still makes for a good ride. It kind of reminded me of The Cottage in the way that every one in the movie were caught in this surreal situation, but they reacted like they were in some totally unrelated genre of movie. Plus with the Christmas theme...it's perfect of the coming week.
Another movie I'm hoping to get soonish is a number called The Children. Just in time for Christmas, what better movie to watch than one about sweet little kids hacking their parents up during the festive season. Please buy the kids what they want.we've all seen Children of the Corn

Things that keep me up at night
So I woke up almost three hours ago at about 2am, and for some reason I couldn’t go back to sleep. I didn’t mind though, because I found that I was just in time to catch Rob zombie’s Halloween on TV. Funny coincidence was that I had watched Halloween 4 before I went to bed and I was actually thinking of getting the remake for the weekend. I loved that movie when I saw it in theaters…it’s such a modern classic. It totally grabs all the things that made the original a classic and builds on it to bring the horror that is Michael Myers to today’s audiences.
The crap thing is, after watching the movie I caught myself in a mental debate about who I think is cooler… Michael Myers or Leatherface. I am such a huge fan of the Texas chainsaw Massacre, crazy people wanting to eat you is always messed up.
But then I started thinking about Jason Vorhees because earlier in the night I was reading a Friday The 13th Comic called “How I spent my Summer Vacation.”
It was actually a very good book, especially compared to the horrible Jason Vs Leather Face I had read last week.
So now I’m lying in bed thinking which one of the these guys, Jason, Mike or Leatherface would be creepy to run into in real life. And which one is cooler.
Michael Myers is creepy because he is pure evil. I can see no clear motive as to why he does what he does aside from the fact that he is seriously messed up. Jason Voorhees is like this brute force, driven to have his revenge on all those that he sees as having robbed him of a normal life. Then there’s Leatherface who just wants to cut you up and literally eat you. I would argue that Leatherface’s intentions are also as evil as Myers… but I’m not all too sure if at a conscious level, he is aware that what he is doing is wrong.
What do you think? Which one of these bad boys is your favorite? Or which one wouldn’t you want to meet in real life.

I spy...
As I have mentioned in one of my earlier posts...I am not a huge fan of reality shows. But recently I've seen a lot of movies about reality shows, and they've been some what interesting.
In fact, just tonight I saw a very cool movie about some people on an online reality TV show. The movie is called My Little Eye, and is about these people who sign up to stay in a house in the middle of nowhere. They are told that if they all stay and make it out of the house after a certain amount of time, they will receive a large sum of cash. The catch is that their daily exploits are captured on camera and put online for the world to see.
It all starts off as fun and games... but soon things start getting a little weird and strangely creepy. Soon the house guests have a few unwelcome visitors that start leaving things around the house, these things relate to certain aspects of the house gusts past.The real fun starts when our house guests discover that they're not being watched to see who wins the prize money, but rather... the viewers are in a bidding war to see which one of them dies first.
To tell you any more would spoil the story... but let me just say, this movie is pretty sweet. The characters are well drawn out and the tension and climate of the movie is set without killing too much time in idle pacing. The story is very well written and through out the movie it actually feels like you're watching a reality show.That doesn't mean that the whole movie is crappy film grains and shit camera angles. It looks and sounds very good.
The gore and such in this movie aren't anything to brag about... but all the action fits perfectly in the scheme of things. plus you get some eye candy here and there. All and all this baby is well worth the watch.
Here's a little something extra for ya.
In the movie, every now and then the character of Rex is seen playing a video game. Listening to the sounds of the game...and at one point hearing the game's title screen music, I realized it was Evil Dead: Hail to the king. I loved that game and played it to bits on my PS1.

Stick to the games
So today I went down to one of our local video stores to get my self my weekend movie fix. When I was about to leave I saw that they had an interesting animated movie up on the 'New Release' shelf. I was surprised to see that it was the 3D animated movie adaption of Resident Evil, a little number called Resident Evil: Degeneration.
Being a fan of the game, I was happy to add this movie to my weekend viewing list, plus you can never have too much zombie action.
Let me start ofo by saying that sadly I am not a big fan of the Resident Evil movie series. The first one was kind of cool, but for some reason it just doesn't cut it for me. I know that Resident Evil is not just all about zombies. It has to do with viruses and mutations and what not. But I see the movie as more of a big action flick that happens to have the Resident Evil hallmarks all over it.
The movie not having the major characters from the game kind of allows the RE universe to expand though... so I guess that's a good thing.
Unlike the live action movie... this animated movie ties in a lot closer to the game. The story follows the characters Clarie Redfield and Leon Kennedy who were the stars of the second Resident Evil game, and it serves as a bridge between 2005s RE4 and next years RE5. It looks like a long cut scene from the games...which is kind of cool because the RE games are known for their awesome cut scenes.
Sadly though,I felt the whole thing just felt like something that should have been broken up with bits of game play. As I was watching, some part of my mind kept trying to get me to 'press start'. In the tradition of the Resident Evil games.... the plot unfolds very slowly. Sad thing is there wasn't much of a plot to unfold. Watching such a thing in-game is sweet...but when you sit there for an hour or so with nothing else to do than to watch it, it gets tiering. good thing was I that watched it with a few friends of mine who are fans of the game so it went by alright... poking fun at it helped too.
The action though spared and spread out...is pretty good, with some nice looking zombies in the beginning. Sadly after the first bit of the movie, the zombies take a back seat to the 'story' and this other weird mutant thing gets to tear stuff up. (It's basically the same baddie from RE2.)
The animation its self is nice, but compared to some of the stuff thats out these days it looks a bit dated. If you've seen 2005s Final Fantasy Advent Children, then this baby looks very stiff. It does have nice water effects though, and the 'last boss' looks very cool and the action sequences with it killing things is pretty much the high light of the whole movie.
If you're a Resident Evil fan this movie is a fair enough watch... but if you care nothing for the games and are more of a fan of the film series, this movie will not be what you wanted.
After watching it though, I am now really starved for RE5.

I loved Biology
One thing I love aside from Zombie movies is monster movies. Not necessarily big ass monster movies like Cloverfield or The Mist, but things like The Fly or Mimic.
On that note.. I am looking forward to the upcoming movie Splice.
Staring Adrian Brody, the movie is about these two scientists that are messing around with Gene Splicing to create a this chick thats a human/animal half breed. As expected for the purpose of entertainment...this thing gets out of hand and starts causing trouble. I found a few shots of the she-animal thingo online, here one of em.

More Comics!
Just got done reading Jason Vs Leatherface.
And I must say...it wasn't what I expected. The story was nothing amazing...but it was interesting and kind of fun watching these two horror movie baddies interact. I've often wondered what would happen if the Hewitt family ever met up with someone that as terrifying as them.
Sadly the story explores this notion very loosely... and for some reason focuses more on giving Jason this weird, emo like personality.
Plus it makes Leatherface look really crap.
The basic story is that Jason runs into Leatherface in the woods and is invited back to his house after Jason cuts this guys head off and proves that he is not "Meat" but "one of them." We then watch Jason hanging out and at some levels makeing friends with Latherface. We are also treated to some of Jason's thoughts as he asks him self such questions as "I have killed everyone I have ever met...why am I letting these people live?"
Compared to the Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash comic series, this books seems very mid-core. As a fan of both these guys though... I found it nice to have. But it could have been so much better. The writing is a bit meh and the art goes from being alright to weirdly cartoonish. Nothing like the recent stuff being dished out. But it was published back in 1995 by some company called Topps comic that is no longer around...so I'll cut it some slack.
The covers are awesome though and I'm glad I got them for that alone.
Being a huge fan of Leatherface...I'm gonna try and get my self another comic called "Texas chainsaw Massacre: About a Boy" which is the story of little Leatherface growing up into Big Leatherface.
High School of the Dead
I'm not normally a big fan of Anime. I know a lot of people are, but I just can't seem to get into it. I did kinda like the Street Fighter 2 movie and this one called Ninja Scroll. But aside from that, I wouldn't go out of my way to pick one up.
Manga is another thing I can't get into. I've read some... but like the animated stuff they just drag on too long for me.
Well... I guess I've kind of made an exception because since last night I've been reading High School of the Dead. I got a translated copy of the manga cause the name made me curious, even before I got through the first volume, I began looking around for the other issues. Now I have all 4 volumes.

And I must say... it makes for a very exciting read. It's basically about a bunch of high school kids whose town has been over run by zombies. The art is manga and it has tones of panty shots and what not thrown all over the place. But it's the zombies and the gore that sealed the deal for me.
If I can get my hands on more stuff like this,I just might expand my entertainment horizons... but no tentacle monsters please.

Paranoid Android
Ever watched someone go insane?
That's what you get when you spend a bit of your time watching Bug. I got this movie not really knowing what to expect. I saw a couple of mixed reviews about the film, with people praising it and some people cursing it for a number of reasons.
Let me just say Bug is not a creature-fest, that is probably why a lot of people hated it...cause they watched it expecting to see some bugs eating their way out of some guys face.
It's a movie directed by none other than William Friedkin... the genius that brought us The Exorcist.
It's hard for me to describe this movie because I'm afraid I might spoil it. But it's basically about paranoia... and how dangerous it can be. An interesting thing is that the movie is based on a play by the same name. Which would explain a lot cause it does have a bit of an 'art house' feel to it.
The movie is also very tense and frustrating, but in a good way. At some point in the movie we begin to see things that the people in the movie are not aware of...or have chosen not to see. This makes the movie even more tense.
Mind you it's very slow... but some what rewarding at the end. So you may need to invest some time into it. Now that i think about it...one thing this movie may have in common with Friedkin's Exorcist is the pacing. How the story and characters are patiently laid out only to be decimated at the end.
You may look around to find some reviews about this movie that may trash it... don't let that put you off, but if you are going to watch it please don't read anything that gives you actual movie details.

Saw some interesting movies
Last night I watched a little something called The Plague, staring TVs James Van Der Beek. This movie started off pretty good, with an interesting plot that could have taken it to some very cool places.
Suddenly all the worlds children go into a weird coma, resulting in the world falling into degradation. 80% of these kids are kept in special hospitals, constantly monitored. One night, 10 years later...they wake up. What follows is a movie that tries to be parts 28days later and other parts Children of the corn.
It started off very promising but then failed to deliver very badly. At the end I was sad for being so excited at the start of it.
Today however I watched a very entertaining film called Drive Thru, fun little Screamish slasher movie that didn't seem to take its self too seriously. It didn't have bucket loads of gore...but it had a funky looking baddie that was fun to watch. One of those movies where you don't mind cheering for the killer.
The movie's about a bunch of Hollywood rich kids being picked off one at a time by some guy in a clown out fit. He kinda looks like he could be a member of ICP.
A very cool movie that has decent acting, funny dialogs and a plot that you can drink beer with and chill to. the first bit of the movie is classic...with these wanna be gangsta kids "getting caped yo!"
O and it has that funny guy from According to Jim.

I haven't seen too many Nazi movies recently. You may have... I haven't. I guess people are tired of them or film makers are bored of em.

The tired clique is not all but lost! Why settle for Nazis? When you can have Undead Nazis!!
These guys are creeping into everything from video games to movies. The recent installment of Call of duty has a "zombie mode" which is unlocked when you finish the campaign. Not forgetting the zombie skins in GTA4.
Outpost was the first movie I've seen recently that had Undead Nazis doing their thing. Set in an unknown part of eastern Europe, the movie is about some mercenaries being hounded by Dead Nazis brought back through some weird experiment. Not the most amazing of movies... but it has it's moments of creep outs.
There were also talks of a zombie movie about Dutch Zombies fighting Nazi zombies... called Worst Case Scenario. Currently this movie is in development hell, but keep those fingers crossed.
But I tell you what movie is coming out soon. It's a Norwegian Nazi zombie movie called Dead Snow or "Dod Sno" as the Norwegians call it.
Dead Snow
Set to be released at the Sundance Film Festival, the movie is about a couple kids that are having a holiday on some snow covered mountain when they unwittingly awaken a bunch of Undead Nazis. One thing leads to another and the result is a fight for survival against zombies in the snow.

The Kids in the snow I don't care much for...but it is staple of the horror genre so I can't complain, but the Zombie Nazi's I am looking forward too :D
Maybe we could have a remake of Shock Waves.

But I tell you what movie is coming out soon. It's a Norwegian Nazi zombie movie called Dead Snow or "Dod Sno" as the Norwegians call it.
Dead SnowSet to be released at the Sundance Film Festival, the movie is about a couple kids that are having a holiday on some snow covered mountain when they unwittingly awaken a bunch of Undead Nazis. One thing leads to another and the result is a fight for survival against zombies in the snow.

The Kids in the snow I don't care much for...but it is staple of the horror genre so I can't complain, but the Zombie Nazi's I am looking forward too :D
Maybe we could have a remake of Shock Waves.

Simon Pegg Hates running Zombies
It's true.
The star of one of my favorite zombie flicks, Shaun of the Dead, hates the new trend of fast paced zombie action. So much so that he even wrote a very interesting article about it in The Guardian.
It seems he was inspired to bring up the matter after watching the latest British effort Dead Set, saying that he was very excited about watching it until he saw that the makers had forgone one 'Key Detail' as he puts it...and that is that Zombies don't run!
Aside from talking about running zombies, MR. Pegg goes on to give us a brief history of the zombie in movies, and also how making zombies faster and more threating takes away from their allure.

I can see what his getting at, and what we loose when we turn zombies into a threat that is so apparent and immediate. But I take my zombies however I can get them. I like the running one's in small numbers and the faster ones in large groups.
If however someday we happen to face a zombie apocalypse, Id rather they be slow... just so its fun for everyone :D

I know what I'm doing this weekend
Well, my copy of Dead Rising came in early. I had rented this when it first came out and had enjoyed it very much. About time I got my own copy...

It seems some movie producer who owned the rights to Romero's Dawn of the Dead movie sued Capcom, the developers of Dead Rising, for riping off the whole Zombies in a mall thing. In fact, when I had first played it, one of the reasons I really loved the game was because it reminded me so much of Dawn of the Dead.
The Producer how ever lost the law suit, with the judge saying that just because the movie and game shared a common theme, didn't mean it was part of the same property.
Interesting... o well. I'm going to go back to playing, and then I'll watch Dawn of the Dead to see how I can improve my style :P

Left 4 Dead: First Impressions
So thanks to my buddy Wilson I finally got my hands on Valves new Zombie survival horror game Left 4 Dead. Some how I had been very patient while waiting for this game...but after spending a few hours on it, I can't believe the gem I now have.Ever wished a zombie outbreak would happen so that you can live out your fantasy of what it might be like to survive it? Hiding, finding safe and secure places to hold out...working with other survivors to insure you own safety. Well that's exactly what you get to do here.
There are a few zombie survival horror games out there. But a lot of them require you to do things like solve a puzzle here... stop an evil corporation there. But Left 4 Dead gives you but one purpose...it hands you a gun and says "Just try and Survive what's coming."
And that's what it's all about. There's a zombie outbreak, all that you have come to know has been changed forever. Now try and get out of here before you become a painful meal for something un-dead.
Don't worry though...You're not alone,as you get to play through the game with three of your close buds, and trust me.. you need your friends on this one.
The main purpose of Left 4 Dead is to serve as a kick ass multi-player game, though you can play by your self with the help of some bots.
Now as I'm writing this, I'm wondering where would be a good place to mention 'that I F**ing love this game" I think I'll just leave it there for now.
Right from the exciting opening video, that leads you to a roof top where you start your fight for survival, the game immediately gives you the feel of a classic zombie movie. The sounds, the environment... this thing makes you the star of your own little zombie movie.
I really got so into this, instead of running around like mad shooting everything, I was actually taking my time and walking around. Listening to every sound...mindful of every shadow. It was so creepy simply walking around and hearing the moan of the zombies around the corner.
The zombies in the game range from your classic stumbling Romero style zombies, to the Danny Boyle 28 Days Later kind of screaming, rushing zombies. But to mix things up a bit, there are several other breeds of zombies that make the game a little more interesting. Things that can leap along walls and pounce on you... or creeps that can grab you with their long tongues. These elite zombies are harder to take down, and if you don't have friends near by, surviving an attack by one of these things can prove to be very tricky.
The real bad ass ones so far are these huge monster like zombies called Tanks, that come rushing at you and just totally destroying whatever gets in their way. Then they have these little girl zombies called Witches that sit around in dark corners... and you can hear them crying when you get close to them, but if you leave them alone, they'll do the same for you. Hearing them whimper in the dark totally spooks me out.
To be honest I'm too much in aw to be writing anything about this game right now... my mind is just too numb and wants to get back to the action.
Let me just say that this is everything I could hope for in a zombie shooter. As far as games go, this might not be the most amazing or ground breaking. But for a Zombie nut such as my self...this thing plays like a dream come true.
Be sure to pick this bad boy up if your looking for a new game to kick some time with.
Upcoming Outbreaks
Well it seems we can look forward to some new high profile zombie flicks in the not to distant future. As far as zombie movies go...you have a lot of independent and small time projects that are out every year, then you have your big budget zombie movies.
The remake of Dawn of the Dead was an awesome movie, and it seems that it's producer Richard Rubinstein has announced a sequel. Dawn of the Dead was one of the movies that made me feel that remakes can be good. So lets see what happens with the sequel.
And what does one do after directing a James Bond movie? Well Marc Foster, director of Quantum of Solace is said to be gearing up to direct a movie adaptation of the zombie novel World War Z, written by Max Brooks... the genius behind the Zombie Survival Guide.
It seems Zombies are the bigs bucks these days... with everything from video games to big shot movies taking them very seriously. I'm looking forward to 28 months later, which was announced by Danny Boyle back in March.... If the quality of the effort is anything like 28 weeks, then we're gonna be in for a real treat. But I think the movie I'm most anticipating next year would have to be the Evil Dead remake. The 1981 movie is one of my all time favorites, given todays movie magic, I think it could be redone very nicely. Plus since it is the man him self, Sam Raimi in charge, only good things will come.
Aside from the big name projects, I'm sure we'll have a lot of pleasing smaller ones too. Colin... a movie a bout a guy being bitten by a zombie is out soon. We get to watch as Colin slowly turns into a flesh craving zombie through the course of the movie. Then there's this really cool poster for Infected that looks promising.
All in all...just keep your eyes and ears open for many incoming Zombie treats. Like real zombies, the good movies seem to almost creep up on us.

Mother F***ing Zombies on a plane!
A long while back I had gotten my hands on a movie called Flight of the living Dead. Thing is, some how this baby had slipped my mind. It wasn't till tonight when a friend of mine asked me "hey you seen that mother f**king movie with them mother f**king zombies on a mother f**king plane?" when I remembered it...It gave me very found memories.
I remember getting this movie as a joke, thinking I was in for some cheap ass thrills and maybe some laughs. I watched this over at a friends place, and I must say, this movie is far from simple cheap thrills.
It has all the makings of a classic. Believable characters, cool looking zombies...and a plot idea that makes you say "I gotta see how they do this"
The story is about a zombie out break on a plane, caused by some scientists that smuggle on board a container...which contains some kind of virus. One thing leads to another and the container's contents are leaked...resulting in some of the planes crew and passengers becoming zombies.
The zombies in this movie are a real treat to watch... with crazy eyes and blood curdling screams, they start to eat up the non-infected people on board the plane. The make-up effects in this movie a very nice... while the blood and gore though not too crazy, are enough to do their part. A lot of the passengers become zombie meals in funny little ways.
The acting for most part of it is pretty decent, though the lines do get a bit campy now and then. But this can only be expected from a movie such as this. You can tell by watching, that though the movie may have a few short comings...it truly does believe in it self, and thus delivers a solid zombie tooting good time.
My favorite zombie in it is the one that Erick Avari turns into, at one point he looses his legs and it's both fun and creepy watching him 'walk' around on his hands.
As far as horror and zombie movies go...you could end up watching some really bad crap. Or you can give your self a treat with this movie.

Romero writes a better diary
Sometimes it’s hard to value something unless you have something else to compare it to. The first time I saw Diary of the Dead, sadly I wasn’t very impressed. I was really looking forward to watching it, being Romero’s new zombie baby and all.
But I got around to watching Diary of the Dead in the wake of such movies as the Dawn of the Dead remake and 28 weeks later. So at the end...it all just seemed a bit under whelming.
Man was I wrong.

The movie did have a very cool and very intense night scene, with our survivors running past bloody hungry zombies with nothing but the light from their camera to guide their way. But then they had another night scene ...and then did it again...and again...and then again... and then “o lets use night vision!”
If I hadn’t seen Diary of the living dead...then this movie may have been a little better for me(Even though Zombie Diaries was released before diary of the dead). It was mildly entertaining... but I felt if I hadn’t seen Zombie Diaries, I would not have missed much. One thing that Zombie Diaries does do pretty good is give you the reality feel. After the end product of all the editing in Diary of the dead, they might as well have shot a straight zombie movie.
